I got out early in the month and took these photos. I had many more ideas but apparently the month got away from me and I had to pick 3 from my only trip. That sort of upsets me but it's my fault. I thought a cemetary would be great for black and white photos.

Trying to get back into this whole photography thing. We, at least I think we decided we now do one subject a month. There has been some debate about that. I digress, our subject for this month of May was Spring. I don't do so well with more abstract items but I think this was a good exercise in getting back to shooting. After looking at the photos, I realized I should have done some things differently but here are the "best" three from the ones I took. I present to you Spring, as interpreted by John.

I was supposed to post these a while ago when we did portraits but I was lazy or something. I am posting them now. Better late than never and it's never too late if you care. I learned that from a Care Bear. So these are some portraits of co-workers which was the assignment. I worked up the nerve to ask these guys for photos and they allowed me. It turned out to be fun and I tried to make it quick so I didn't take a bunch of photos. I thought the black and white would be a nice touch. - John

I am sure I will get a little grief, but hey, I consider these portraits after a fashion, plus if you had seen the dirty tired looking people I had as potential subjects, well, hey, these guys look pretty good.

Most of these are self explanatory. I liked the color contrast on this one.

This was May from a special zoo with just primates. She was a cutie!

So these, compared to John's and Tim's photos, aren't the best. Of course, I am a huge fan of simplicity and not a fan of doing a lot of editing to my photos. However, I really need to step up my game with the boys!

The one above are two wine corks. Nothing special :-)

This one is also a wine cork. If you look closely, you can see tiny pieces of fiber on the left hand side.

This one is my favorite AC Moore find. They are holiday bead like things that are in vases around our house. I love the colors.

Tim Macro 1

First, John did a really great job this week. I have thought it would be "cool" to do the water drops, but never tried until today, and then I could not figure it out. The tough thing about these assignments is making the time. John is really good at doing that. I made time to spend a couple hours and got the following. I will explain how I did the following.

On this one, and all following, used daylight coming in the window with my canon s5. This was just playing around with a macro lens attached. All that does is to let me be farther away and zoom out. I used as small an aperture as possible (maximum depth of field) and a tripod.

Originally I wanted to do some pics like John, but then used some interesting glasses, some food color, water and aluminum foil on a glass table to take these. Because the sunlight was so bright, I could handhold most of these.

Vicky and I went back on forth on if this was in the top three (she helped me), but I just liked it. I will see what others think. That is the fun part of this exercise.

Okay, Vicky loved this, I liked #3 above better. I would want to try a few more, but timing is everything, focus, etc. It is cool. Look forward to seeing Regina's... :-)

Close Up - John

This week's assignment was to take close up/macro shots of everyday items. I was pretty stoked about this as I've been wanted to do some macro shots of water drops and things like that for a while. I took over a thousand photos for this assignment and it was hard to narrow it down. I don't think my shots are great but I learned a lot along the way and if I had to do this again, I could probably setup a much better environment to take these type of shots. So, below are 3 of my shots. Hopefully my best but I'm not sure. Some of my other photos can be found here.

This is a drop of milk going into coffee. It is following another drop and you can see the splash beneath it.

This is just a drop of water going into water. Again, it is following another drop and you can see the wave results from the previous drop.

So this is obviously not a drop of some liquid. I took many other photos of everything day things and I liked the color balance on this.

This subject was much harder than I anticipated. I was pretty excited about it and had some inspiration from some research but it was really hard to find good, crisp, well defined photos.

This was taken at Old Salem. it was one of the old houses. I liked the contract of the green, yellow, and the black of the shadow. Also, I thought the angle lines were nice.

This was an entrance way to a building at Wake Forest University. At first I was shooting from afar but then walked up on it and saw it completely differently. Sometimes just changing the angle or distance makes a big difference.

The above was inspired by some photos I saw like this. I was amazed by the heart shadow from the ring and I thought the bible was a nice touch.

First 5 Minutes - John

This was a very interesting subject. Sort of abstract for me and I struggle with those things. However, I am pleased with what I came up with. I probably did 99% thinking and researching and about 1% photographing this time.

The above is the headboard/bedframe. I liked these shapes and thought the sepia version of it would be interesting instead of the harshness of the actual black on white.

Coffee mug on my nightstand. I really like the shadows here. Also, I like how my eye is constantly pulled to the wedding photo on the right. I have to mentally fight to stay on the mug.

Macro of the TV remote control in the bedroom. I often end up sleeping on this and it is usually one of the first things I deal with in the morning as it's usually jabbing me in the ribs.

First 5 Minutes

This is what I see EVERY morning for the first five minutes... without glasses my eyes shift back and forth between the picture of the tree and the horizontal lines... not a great shot, but it is my first five. Happy Holidays!

Night Lights - John's Photos

Thus far this has been my favorite assignment. Lot's of new things I learned about my camera and photography in general for this. I don't know if the others were as excited about this assignment as I was. That's how excited I was about this. I mean, I loved this subject. Whether or not my photos are the best, I had a blast and to quote someone famous, "That's what it's all about.".

I played a lot with over/under exposing on the above shot and really enjoyed working with the candles and a tripod. I liked this one because the candle in the middle is in focus while those in front and behind are not. I was trying to get this effect but didn't expect it to turn out.

I found this spot in Dallas, TX while on business. I like the repeated patterns of lines and lights.

This is Reunion Tower in Dallas, TX. This may not have been one of my best photos but I really like the strong defined vertical lines in this and how the tower is so different in color from the other structures.
